Ticker Tape
Lighters for McCartney and
Harrison
The United Artist "wrap"
party for the 1965 movie
Help! featured a luau. One
of the items distributed as
gifts to The Beatles at the
party were "ticker tape
lighters." These novelty
lighters that resembled ticker
tape machines were produced in
Japan starting in the late 50s.
These two ticker tape lighters
are screw-mounted on black metal
bases. One base has a plaque
that reads "U.A. Help Luau Paul
McCartney," and the other reads
"U.A. Help Luau George
Harrison." Each lighter is
enclosed in a dome-shaped glass
globe. The ticker tape paper
remains intact on the George
Harrison lighter. Perhaps ticker
tape lighters were chosen as a
reference to a scene in the
movie where George embraces a
ticker tape machine. He was
known as the Beatle who loved
money the most. Lighter: 3 x 2
